工商時報【N.Dannenbring】

Nostalgic experiences are when you hear someone says "Oh…back in my day we had blah blah blah". Now you might interpret this remark as a sign of getting old and he probably envisages society as becoming an undesirable place to live. But we all in fact do this (1)to a certain degree.

When I was growing up, we had VCR and tape and MSN was the hype, now there is facebook and twitter and blueray. Although I’m not even of an old age, what I have just done is evoke a statement of nostalgia.

All of us will have a time in the past when things were less perplexing and we were more (A)innocent. Those times are long gone and it’s impossible to go back to them. So (B)in return, we can daydream about those moments of happiness.

Past research has shown nostalgia to be a sign of depression, that nothing is good anymore and there is a longing for the past. In fact nostalgia was always diagnosed as a disorder, only recently has it become associated with positive (C)connotations of memories.

Nostalgia actually has this power to counteract anxiety, loneliness and boredom. It makes us closer to strangers, and it makes that cold night in a cold room, a little warmer. We are afraid to look back on the past because it reminds us of our flaws. For example, in the past you got cheated by a close friend of yours, but does that mean we should stop trusting people? The answer is no! By visiting our past, we can learn from our own mistakes to become a better person. We might have been cheated but we still managed to get back on our feet; there were still other supportive people helping us through.

Memories are all around us and the tiniest thing can evoke this sense in ways unimaginable. Let’s say the shop you used to visit closed down but decided to reopen. The shop might have changed hand and it has lost that atmosphere, but that’s old memory coming back to life.

Having a nostalgic moment can be very relaxing. It relieves our stress and gives us a break. When things are tough and nothing is going right, that little sense of nostalgia can get you (2)back on track.
