連續兩場世界大賽，都有令人嘖嘖稱奇的收尾方法。第四戰，紅襪隊守護神上原浩治送出「再見牽制」，拿下比賽第27個出局數，幫助紅襪隊以4比2獲勝，系列賽2比2平手。對於紅襪、紅雀隊來說，接下來是三戰兩勝的對決。

這一戰，地主紅雀隊3局下先聲奪人，一出局後Matt Carpenter敲出安打，並靠失誤攻佔二壘，接著Carlos Beltran補上適時安打，打回Carpenter，取得1比0領先。

紅襪則在5局上扳平，而且「老爹」David Ortiz再度扮演重要角色，率先上場揮出二壘安打，推進到三壘，再靠Stephen Drew的高飛犧牲打回來，兩隊1比1平手。

勝負關鍵出現在第6局，紅雀隊先發投手Lance Lynn雖然很快抓到兩出局，壘上沒跑者，但危機卻從此刻開始。Dustin Pedroia敲出安打、Ortiz獲得保送，紅雀隊換投、由Seth Maness上場救火，卻被Jonny Gomes揮出三分砲，紅襪隊取得4比1領先。
