美國專利和商標局通過了一項蘋果申請的專利，專利中描述了一種革命性的柔性材料，可以用來打造MacBook或其他產品的外殼和合頁機構。這種新材料可以 彎曲成任何幾何形狀，這種材料將允許蘋果打造真正驚人的下一代產品。蘋果在專利中描述了通過專門的設備在剛性材料上使用鐳射切割實現許多『柔性孔』的技術 工藝，材料經過處理後可以彎曲別並成為設備的合頁機構。
根據ZOL新聞中心報導，蘋果提到，這種全新的材料可以有效的降低設備體積，因為不需要傳統的合頁機構。想象一下，沒有黑色塑膠鉸鏈的MacBook，設備的整體全都是用一整塊鋁金屬打造，讓顯示屏和機身無縫的接合在一起。
雖然，這種新材料被用在MacBook上是很明顯的。蘋果專利中還提到了這種技術可以應用在其他產品上，包括智慧手機、電視機和遊戲主機等，比如可以應用在耳機線纜與揚聲器的連接處，防止損傷，也可以用在類似於Smart Cover的外設上。這已經不是蘋果第一次申請涉及柔性材料的專利了，我們之前曾經見過蘋果申請的柔性顯示屏、柔性電池和柔性耳機插頭專利。
